Divergent Thinking and Your Business
Considering this is my
first blog, I feel compelled to introduce myself. My name is Devon Davidson and I am the new Marketing Coordinator at 24hrAssistant; or the “new Jordy” as some have called me. I will be graduating from the University of Saskatchewan this spring with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, majoring in marketing. I have been here at 24hrAssistant/zu for almost two weeks now and I am loving every minute of it! When I envisioned my first post-university job, I did not think I would be downtown with my own corner office. At least that is what I tell my friends. The truth being, I just stole Jordy’s office while he was away. But let’s keep that between us. Anyway, what I really wanted to talk about is divergent thinking and its importance in business.
For those of you who are not familiar with this term, divergent thinking is using creative ability to produce a wide range of possible solutions or ideas. Basically, divergent thinking is thinking outside the box. In my opinion, this is quite possibly one of the best strategies that a business can follow. To be successful you need to be creative and innovative in everything that you do. Do you think that the people of Apple would be successful if they followed the lead of Microsoft or Dell? Probably not, because Apple is the company that is consistently producing innovative products that no other company is offering. By offering something new and different your company will obtain a first-mover advantage and gain credibility in the eyes of the consumer. If you get the chance, I would recommend reading about “Blue Ocean Strategy”. This strategy is accepted globally and further validates my point that divergent thinking is critical. If you have no idea what I am talking about, Blue Ocean Strategy is basically the idea that your business should compete based on differentiation, low-cost and not to outperform the competition; but to create new market space and make the competition irrelevant. Now I realize that only so many companies can successfully introduce a new product or service, but you will never know if you don’t try.
I feel that 24hrAssistant is reflective of divergent thinking and I am thrilled to be a part of it. In a society where so many companies try to follow the competition and perform better, it’s nice to belong to a company where creativity, innovation and divergent thinking are valued. Here is one quote from a 24hrAssistant client that demonstrates my point, “Not only has 24hrAssistant increased efficiency with booking, all the attention to my website has increased people’s knowledge of what I do and how it can benefit them,” says Creator Tillie Dyck.”I find myself with more freedom and ideas to further expand my business.” An innovative service like 24hrAssistant has increased productivity and given this particular business an opportunity to expand. Innovation comes from divergent thinking and the 24hrAssistant team clearly demonstrates the positive impacts this could have on your business. Thanks for checking out my first blog and I hope you enjoyed it.
Cheers,
Devon
